Application Costs and Financial Aid
Admission Information Sessions Applicants to UVTI must have completed a bachelor's degree in the arts or sciences. We are especially looking for candidates with a strong liberal arts background. Advanced degrees or career and life experience -- which may include volunteer work or raising a family -- are distinct advantages. Most important, successful candidates must be committed to working with the young as a calling, and this idealism must be grounded in genuine liking for young people and experience with them. Interested applicants are encouraged to review this site to learn as much about the special nature of the program as possible. The directors will be happy to answer any of your questions, either by phone or by e-mail. First steps: The admission process normally begins with the submission of a completed application, along with four short essays, a résumé, transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. The Interview: Once a complete application has been received, including transcripts, UVTI staff will review the application and invite the candidate for an interview. At the time of the interview, an additional writing sample will be requested. Preliminary acceptance: After the interview, if the candidate shows promise and wishes to proceed, meetings are scheduled with potential mentor teachers. Final acceptance: When the candidate and a mentor teacher have agreed to work together, final acceptance occurs. A waiting list will be kept, and candidates who have not previously been accepted may be contacted over the summer if a space becomes available. Praxis tests: Interns applying for New Hampshire teacher certification in any endorsement area are required by the state to take the Praxis I Basic Skills Test. All interns must submit scores for the Praxis I test before starting the UVTI program. In some cases, GRE or other graduate admissions tests may be substituted for Praxis I. Elementary and Secondary interns must also take a Praxis II content test in their subject areas. We encourage interns to take Praxis II after they have entered the program and have spent a semester or more teaching their chosen content. Both Praxis I and Praxis II scores must be on file before UVTI can recommend an intern for New Hampshire certification. The program begins in mid-August, with a week-long orientation. Interns then report to their placement schools for the teacher in-service days leading up to the opening of the school year. You can download and print UVTI's application form here. (This is a 115kb Acrobat file and may take a minute to load. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can get it free by clicking here.) To request an application form by mail or to receive additional information, call UVTI at 603-448-6507 or send e-mail. Costs and Financial Aid For the academic year 2008-2009, tuition will be $13,800. There is an additional, non-refundable reservation fee of $250 payable upon preliminary acceptance into the program. Payment of the reservation fee allows UVTI's program directors to begin searching for an intern placement for the applicant. Interns are also responsible for paying for the Praxis test, which is required by the state for certification. UVTI offers its own Byrne Endowed Scholarships to qualified interns. Funding sources also include federal Title IV funds (Stafford Loans and Pell Grants) and local, state, and national scholarship programs. The financial aid process begins with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). We recommend applying online at the FAFSA web site, www.fafsa.ed.gov. Be sure to list UVTI's school code, 034373, in the appropriate space on the application. After your application has been processed, UVTI will receive the Student Aid Report and will work with you to put together an aid package, making every effort to make UVTI financially feasible for you. Many candidates ask if it is possible to defray expenses by holding a part-time job while enrolled at UVTI. The program is so demanding that it is generally unrealistic to attempt other work during the ten-month internship, but call the office to discuss this in more detail.
