Special Education Administrator

Have you ever imagined being part of a school where
special educators and regular educators work as a leadership team
on behalf of all children?

Many great teachers who possess leadership qualities may never have considered becoming an administrator. They don't want to be thought of as a "boss," or they are discouraged by the idea of taking a bunch of courses not connected to best practices. What if there were an alternative route to becoming licensed as both a Special Education Administrator and a K-12 Principal? What If this program was built on your experience and viewed school leadership as a thoughtful, inclusive, collaborative process? And what if, in addition, you could complete your training in in one year, within a school and community of your choosing?

PRN@UVTI promotes creative leadership for learning that is thoughtful, flexible, and student-centered. The Principal Residency Network is a highly successful model for turning great teachers into great school leaders. Since 1998, PRN has developed more than 250 visionary school leaders throughout New England. The Upper Valley Teacher Institute has, for 40 years, helped more than 700 experienced adults change careers to become excellent teachers. Now PRN and UVTI are working together to bring out the leadership potential in educators like you.

PRN@UVTI cultivates reflective school leaders who lead through vision and moral courage; who are committed to social justice and equity; and who understand the dynamics of learning, teaching, and organizational development. We believe the schoolhouse is the best place to develop the next generation of school leaders.

The core of PRN@UVTI is a one-year on-site Residency, where those who aspire to become Principals and Special Education Administrators serve their school community and learn about leadership by working alongside a Mentor Principal. Our rigorous internship includes in-depth reading, reflection, and monthly cohort meetings that bring together educators seeking to become Special Education Administrators and those wishing to become Principals. Together, we discuss complex school issues and models that allow for a more seamless array of educational services for all children. We focus on strategies that encourage school staff to develop successful educational practices for students with disabilities as well as for those within the mainstream of diverse learners.

Successful Aspiring Principals earn a K-12 NH Principal Certification and may earn a Master's or CAGS Degree as well. Through unique partnerships with Plymouth State University and New England College, PRN@UVTI is also able to serve Special Educators who seek a Master's or CAGS Degree. NEC can help you obtain a post graduate degree. PSU will analyze your transcript to determine if you need to take one or more courses for Special Education Administration, and they will be the institution recommending our PRN@UVTI graduates for licensure in Special Ed Administration.

There are several pathways through which those who aspire to become school leaders and special education administrators can realize their goals. We welcome your questions and any particular circumstances you'd like to discuss, and we look forward to talking with you about how you can develop your leadership potential while enhancing the love you have for teaching.
