Administration


UVEI has a small administrative and program staff and a dedicated group of field supervisors
The Executive Director, Robert L. Fried, is the author of many books and monographs on the art of teaching, including The Passionate Teacher and, most recently, The Game of School.  Dr. Fried has been a professor of education at Northeastern University in Boston, as well as a consultant to universities and school districts on topics related to passionate teaching and authentic learning.  He has also been Director of the New Hampshire State Office of Community Education.  The Associate Director for Elementary Education is Pat Thomas, a long-time early childhood and kindergarten teacher who has also served as Assistant Head of School at the Grammar School in Putney.  Sarah Glass, who taught art for 14 years and was a UVEI Supervisor, is the Associate Director for Secondary School Education.  The Associate Director for School Leadership is Shirley Richardson, a long-time administrator and educator.  Beverly Marshall is the Associate Director for Institutional Advancement.  She has previously served in administrative positions at The Cooper Union and WNET/Channel 13 in New York City.  UVEI's Office Manager, Andrea Feid, has held similar positions in the Upper Valley for ten years.  Jane Leonard, Admissions Coordinator, has worked in offices in New York and California and has experience in computer programming and information systems.  


Teacher Internship Program

Program supervisors are experienced educators who meet regularly with interns and mentor teachers. They observe interns in the classroom, give advice and support, and determine whether interns have mastered the competencies required for graduation. Each supervisor is responsible for no more than five or six interns, making it possible for each intern to receive an unusual amount of personal attention.

Mary Bagnato joins UVEI's cadre of supervisors after teaching kindergarten and early elementary classes in both public and private schools in the United States and oversees.  While at the Marion Cross School in Norwich, Vermont, where she taught for 13 years, she served as a Master Teacher to interns.  She is a graduate of Trinity College. 

Margaret Conner has been an educator for 36 years. She has taught grades K-5 in Brooklyn, New York and grades 3-8 at the Manchester Elementary Middle School in Vermont. She holds a BA in Drama/Philosophy from Chatham College and a Master of Science degree from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York.

Libbet Downs has taught in Kenya, Cambodia, and Thailand, as well as in the United States. Most recently, she founded and ran a small K-5 school in Vermont. She received a BA from Friends World College and a Masters in Early Childhood Education from Bank Street College.

Pat Eastman recently retired after more than 25 years teaching at the State Street School in Windsor, Vermont. She received a Bachelors degree from the University of Vermont and an MEd from the College of St. Joseph.  During her years teaching, she served as a mentor to many UVEI interns.

Jim Elefante recently retired as principal of the Londonderry High School. His honors include New Hampshire High School Principal of the Year and New Hampshire Elementary Principal of the Year. He holds a Masters degree from Adelphi University and a CAGS in Administration and Leadership from Worcester State College. Jim is also on the faculty of the principal internship program.

Susan Farrelly earned a BS in Zoology from the University of New Hampshire and an MEd in Secondary Teaching from Notre Dame College.  She has been very active on the Concord School Board, a highly involved PTO member, and a soccer and softball coach.  Sue has taught junior high, high school and adult education classes.  

Frank Gould has 23 years of teaching experience, primarily in third grade, and is also a K-12 Reading Specialist. Frank earned his MEd from Plymouth State University

Bob Hagen began teaching English since 1968. He has taught in New Jersey and Massachusetts as well as in Vermont. He also spent six years as media generalist.  He earned a BA from the University of Connecticut.

Betty LeRoy has been a classroom teacher (French and English), a department chair, a principal, and a curriculum coordinator. Since retiring, she has been involved in mentoring beginning teachers in local schools. Betty holds a BA from Middlebury College and an MEd and CAGS from the University of Vermont.

Margot Maddock holds a BA from Vassar College and an MEd in Computers in Education from Lesley University. She most recently taught eighth grade math in Hanover, New Hampshire, and she has served as a mentor for many interns from both Dartmouth and UVEI.

Caroline McCrave had been a teacher and curriculum designer for ten years.  During that time, she distinguished herself as an educator who made childrens' learning experiences whole and stimulating by creating a nurturing classroom environment that fostered a love for lifelong learning.  She is a graduate of Reed College and received an MEd from Antioch New England Graduate School.   

Theodore Niboli has taught science for most of his 42 years as an educator. He has also been the Science Department Head, Math Department Head and Dean of Students at Newport Middle High School. He is a certified mentor for new teachers and is presently a Truant Officer for the Newport School District.

Margaret Parsons retired after teaching high school French in Westchester County, New York for 30 years.  As department leader, she often worked with beginning teachers of foreign language.  She received a.BA in French from the University of Connecticut at Storrs and an MA in Childhood and Adolescent Growth from West Connecticut University.

Jay Pike taught social studies in the Concord, New Hampshire area for thirty years before becoming a UVEI supervisor.  He received a BA from Tufts University and a Master of History from the University of New Hampshire. 

Virginia Pinard is an experienced teacher with multiple language certifications.  She has developed multi-media language curriculum and, as a result of her work in multi-media programs, was one of the first presenters at the Christa McAuliffe Technology Workshops. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Carroll College and a MEd from Notre Dame College.  Ginnie received the World Language Teacher of the Year award in 2007-2008. 

Gregory Renner recently retired after spending 34 years as a science teacher and administrator.  In addition to working with many beginning teachers in a formal mentoring role during those years, he also served as a consultant and statewide professional development provider for the Vermont Department of Education.  Greg continues to work closely with the Vermont DOE as an advisor in matters related to science curriculum and assessment.  He received a BS from SUNY Oneonta and a Master in Science for Teachers degree from Lyndon State College. 

Bruce Richards retired after 35 years as a Social Studies and English teacher.  At the Oxbow High School, he served as advisor to the Scholars Bowl and the National Honor Society, and as advisor to the Literary Magazine at both the Blue Mountain Union School and Ocean Township High School.  While he was still teaching, Bruce was a mentor teacher to four UVEI graduates.  He received an MA from the University of California at San Francisco.

Cheryl Simard earned an MA in Counseling and an MEd in Secondary Education from the University of New Hampshire.  At the University of New Hampshire and Antioch New England Graduate School, she supervised and taught critical skills for teachers, and has served as a seminar leader for K-12 education interns in multiple disciplines.

Anne Stephens has taught classes in English for 40 years. She has also served as Director at the Mountain School and the Upper School, Lakeside School.  At the University of Washington, where she received a BA, MA, and PhC in English Literature, her areas of expertise were medieval, American and modern literature.  

Marty Whitney comes to UVEI from the Winchester, Massachusetts public schools, where she taught sixth grade and served as a teacher-trainer and consultant for many years.  She received a BA from Boston University and an MEd from the Graduate School of Education at Boston University.

James Wilson has taught history and economics for 49 years.  At Loomis Chaffee School, he taught history, globalization and economics at the 11th and 12th grade levels.  He is presently on the Thetford Academy Board of Directors, where he is involved in the school's strategic planning.   He received BA from Yale College and a MALS from Wesleyan and Dartmouth College.

 

Principal Internship Program

Program faculty combine extensive and successful experience in school leadership with teaching at the graduate level. Faculty plan for and coordinate monthly meetings of interns and their mentors as well as visit schools to observe interns at work.

Edorah Frazer is Program Coordinator and Lecturer, Master of Education/Certification of Advanced Study Leadership Program at the University of Vermont. She earned an EdD from the University of Vermont, specializing in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.

Janice Lavoie was the Assistant Principal at the Bernice A. Ray School in Hanover where she also chaired the SAU 70 K-12 Math Committee which designed and implemented a cohesive math curriculum with accompanying grade level assessment. Ms. Lavoie has been an educator for 40 years, serving as a teacher, early childhood coordinator, director of pupil services, and principal.  She received an MS and an MEd from the State College at Salem. 

Laura Richter Thomas is the Director of the Antioch New England Graduate School Center for School Renewal, where she is responsible for program development and facilitation, recruitment, training and evaluation of staff.  She is also a member of the Core Faculty.  In addition, she is active in providing coaching and support around faciiltation skills and inquiry-driven instruction in New Hampshire and Vermont schools.  Ms. Thomas has an MEd in Administration and Supervision with Prinicpal's Certification from Antioch New England Graduate School.
