Admission and Application
UVEI accepts applications throughout the year. Orientation for the Class of 2011 will be held in August 2010.
Applicants to UVEI must have completed a bachelor's degree in the arts or sciences. Advanced degrees or career and life experience -- which may include volunteer work or raising a family -- are distinct advantages. Most important, successful candidates must be committed to working with the young as a calling, and this idealism must be grounded in genuine liking for young people and experience with them.
Interested applicants are encouraged to review this site to learn as much about the special nature of the program as possible. The directors will be happy to answer any of your questions, either by phone or by e-mail.
First steps: The admission process normally begins with the submission of a completed application, along with four short essays, a résumé, transcripts, and three letters of recommendation.
The Interview: Once a complete application has been received, including transcripts, UVEI staff will review the application and invite the candidate for an interview. At the time of the interview, an additional writing sample will be requested.
Preliminary acceptance: After the interview, if the candidate shows promise and wishes to proceed, meetings are scheduled with potential mentor teachers.
Final acceptance: When the candidate and a mentor teacher have agreed to work together, final acceptance occurs.
A waiting list will be kept, and candidates who have not previously been accepted may be contacted over the summer if a space becomes available.
Praxis tests: Interns applying for New Hampshire teacher certification in any endorsement area are required by the state to take the Praxis I Basic Skills Test. All interns must submit scores for the Praxis I test before starting the UVEI program. In some cases, GRE or other graduate admissions tests may be substituted for Praxis I.
Elementary and Secondary interns must also take a Praxis II content test in their subject areas. We encourage interns to take Praxis II after they have entered the program and have spent a semester or more teaching their chosen content.
Both Praxis I and Praxis II scores must be on file before UVEI can recommend an intern for New Hampshire certification.
The program begins in mid-August, with a week-long orientation. Interns then report to their placement schools for the teacher in-service days leading up to the opening of the school year.
